I’M GIVING A TALK ON A FAIRLY UNUSUAL SUBJECT!

Awhile ago I went down a research rabbit hole and discovered some really interesting things about some of my favourite films and filmmakers.

My all time hero Jodorowsky. Maya Deren. Kenneth Anger. And others you might be surprised by.

I developed some talks and classes about it which I’ve done in London and elsewhere

But I’ve never presented any of it in my home town Vancouver.

So I’m going to do it now.

Not only that I have put together a cool screening program of short films by artists I know, that have not been shown here in Vancouver.

Beyond Horror: Magick and the Occult on Screen

How has cinema represented magic, ritual and the occult? And what happens when filmmakers are themselves practitioners of esoteric traditions?

Join art and film historian Gillian McIver for an evening exploring the rich relationship between cinema and the occult. Beginning with a lively illustrated talk, Gillian traces the history of magical practice on screen, focusing on films that move beyond the familiar territory of horror to engage seriously with ritual, symbolism and esoteric philosophy.

The talk includes the work of filmmakers and artists who were themselves practitioners of magick, including Maya Deren, Marjorie Cameron, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Kenneth Anger, revealing how their spiritual and magical practices shaped their cinematic vision.

The evening concludes with a curated programme of short films by contemporary artists and filmmakers exploring magical practice, ritual and the esoteric in new and unexpected ways.
